The first sign of Maple Syrup season is always exciting! These light and fluffy maple doughnuts are packed with sweetness and loaded with maple flavor. They’re perfect for breakfast, brunch, dessert or a coffee break! The aroma alone will remind you of your favorite neighborhood donut shop.   • Prepare Doughnut Pans – Preheat the oven to 400 °F.  Grease a doughnut pan with cooking spray.
  • Dry Ingredients – Use a whisk to sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. 
  • Wet Ingredients and Sugar – In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, eggs, sour cream, milk, and vanilla extract. 
  • Combine – Add the flour mixture to the maple syrup mixture, stir until smooth.
  • Use a Piping Bag or Ziploc Bag to Pipe the Batter – Fill each doughnut mold about 2/3 of the wayfull. 
  • Oven – Bake per the recipe until the doughnuts are puffy and crisp.
  • Transfer to Cooling Rack-   Coolin the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Maple Icing – Sir together glaze ingredients and dip donuts in the glaze. Sprinkle with maple sugar or turbinado sugar.

How to Make the BEST Maple Donuts Recipe

  • Ingredients you’ll need to make homemade Maple Donuts:  All purpose flour, 1 and 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt,  2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon cloves, 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup light or dar brown sugar, 1/2 cup maple syrup, 2 large eggs, 1/2 cup sour cream,1/2 cup milk, 1 tablespoon vanilla extract.
  • Ingredients for the Glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar (confectioners’ sugar), 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup, 2-3 Tablespoons heavy cream, and maple sugar or turbinado sugar for drizzling on top (optional).
  • Kitchen tools you’ll need: Donut pans, measuring cups and spoons, large bowl, medium bowl, wire rack and whisk. You can mix the batter by hand or use an electric mixer. 
  • If you don’t have donut pans, you can make this batter into muffins using your muffin tin!
  • All cold ingredients should be brought to room temperature prior to making the batter.
  • It’s important to use real maple syrup in this recipe and not artificial syrup that you may buy for pancakes. It’s an important ingredient and it enhances the flavor and taste of the donuts.
  • Substitutions: If you’d like add bourbon to the glaze, you can. For the glaze, add one tablespoon of Kentucky the bourbon to the ingredients in place of some of the heavy cream.
  • You could also use plain greek yogurt in place of sour cream or replace the milk with whole fat buttermilk.
  • You can customize the flavor adjusting the amount of spices in the batter. You might like to add a pinch of cinnamon to the maple glaze as well. You could even add crispy bacon as a garnish.
  • You can buy maple sugar at large grocery stores. You can also use turbinado sugar or sugar in the raw in its place. 
  • You could add 1-2 teaspoons of maple extract to the batter for a more intense maple flavor.
  • Storage and Leftovers: Store leftover Maple Donut, covered, at room temperature for up to 4 days.  Baked doughnuts last so much longer than fried ones. 
  • You can freeze these doughnuts.  Let them set completely before placing in an airtight freezer-safe container. If you are stacking them, only stack two layers high and place some parchment paper pr wax paper between the layers. Freeze for up to 3 months and thaw on the counter when you are ready to eat.

Ingredients

  • Donuts:
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup full fat sour cream room temperature
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • Glaze:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1-2 Tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 2-3 Tablespoons heavy cream

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F.  Grease a donut pan with cooking spray.
  • In a medium mixing bowl use a whisk to soft together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg and cloves. 
  • In a separate large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, sour cream, milk, vanilla extract and eggs. 
  • Add the flour mixture to the maple syrup mixtrue, stirring or whisking until smooth. (You can mix the batter by hand or use an electric mixer).
  • Fill each donut mold about 2/3 of the wayfull. (You can use a piping bag or a Ziploc bag with the corner snipped to pipe the batter.)
  • Bake for 13-15 minutes or until the donuts are puffy and crisp around the edges.  Cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar,maple syrup and heavy cream until smooth. 
  • Dip the top of each doughnut into the glaze. Give it a little wiggle so that the glaze will adhere to the top. Allow any excess to drip off before moving it to a wire rack to drain rack. Immediately sprinkle with maple sugar or turbinado sugar and allow to set for 10 minutes, then serve.

Notes

    • If you don’t have donut pans, you can bake this maple donut batter in a muffin tin!
