Egg-in-a-hole is a nostalgic dish that I loved in childhood and make for my own family. You may have heard it called toad-in-a-hole, frog-in-a-hole or egg-in-a-basket among many other names. It’s an easy breakfast recipe that’s made using eggs seasoned with salt and pepper cooked inside of a slice of bread. In this recipe, I’ll show you how to I like to make it double stacked like a grilled cheese! It comes together quickly on busy mornings and can be served with any of your favorite breakfast side dishes. - Butter Sliced Bread – Butter 8 slices of bread. (You can make more or less servings.)
- Cut Out the Centers – Use a 2 -3-inch round cookie cutter or biscuit cutter to cut the centers out of 4 slices.
- Melt Butter In Pan – Heat skillet over medium-low heat and add tablespoon of butter.
- Toast Bread Slice – Place one whole slice of bread and one cutout slice into the skillet. (Toast the cut out portion, too!)
- Eggs – Crack an egg into a ramekin or bowl and gently slide it into the center of the bread. Sprinkle the egg with salt and black pepper to your taste.
- Cook – Cook bread slices flipping until lightly toasted, about 2 minutes.
- Egg Slice Bread – Turn the egg slice cooking until the egg has soft-centers or to your desired doneness.
- Cheese Slice Bread – Cook the whole piece until the cheese slice has melted. (You can cover with a lid to expedite the process or increase the heat to medium.)
- Make the Sandwich – Once the egg is set to your taste, use a spatula and place bread centered over the cheese slice.
- Serve – Use a large spatula to remove from the pan to a platter and enjoy garnished with chives or fresh parsley.
How to Make the BEST Egg In A Hole Recipe
- Key Ingredients you’ll need to make grilled cheese Egg-in-a-Hole: Eight 1/2-inch-thick slices of bread (Texas Toast or similar), large eggs, unsalted or salted butter, salt and black pepper to taste, chives or parsley for garnishing, four slices cheddar cheese or colby jack cheese
- Kitchen tools you’ll need: Griddle, large nonstick skillet or cast iron skillet, round cookie cutter or biscuit cutter, knives, turning spatula, ramekin or small bowl.
- You can cook the eggs exactly the way you like them. Cook them for 1-2 minutes if you like a runny yolk, soft yolks will take around 2 minutes or longer for firm yolk centers. - Thicker slices of bread work best for this recipe. A super thin piece of bread won’t contain the egg.
- Variations: Swap out the flavor of the cheese to suit your taste. Use mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, pepper jack cheese or swiss cheese. Serve it with a side of hot sauce for spice or add fresh herbs on top. You could add a layer of baby spinach over the cheese before sandwiching the two pieces together.
- Substitutions: You can use the kind of bread that you like. Use whole wheat bread, low carb bread or gluten free bread for egg-in-a-hole. You could also fill the centers with beaten egg whites in place of whole eggs and use light butter for frying.

Ingredients
- 8 1/2-inch thick slices of bread (Texas Toast or similar)
- 4 large eggs
- 1/4 cup unsalted or salted butter, plus two tablespoons softened
- salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

Butter eight 1/2-inch thick slices of white bread on both sides.

Use a 3-inch round cookie cutter or biscuit cutter to cut the center out of 4 slices.

Melt 1-2 Tbsp butter in nonstick skillet or cast iron skillet over medium-low heat Place one whole slice and one cutout slice into the nonstick skillet. (Tuck the cutout portion of bread to the side to toast too!)

Crack an egg into a ramekin or bowl and gently slide it into the center of the "hole." Season the egg with salt and black pepper to your taste. Flip the whole piece of bread and top the toasted side with a slice of cheese.

Cook bread slices until lightly toasted, about 1-2 minutes per side. Turn the egg piece cooking until the egg has soft-centers OR the yolk is set to your desired doneness. (Adjust the heat to medium, if needed.)

Cook the whole piece of bread until the cheese has melted. (You can cover the pan with a lid slightly offset to expedite the process.) Once the egg is set to your taste, use a turning spatula and place the egg bread centered over the cheese slice.

Remove from the pan to a plate and serve garnished with chives or fresh parsley and your favorite breakfast side dishes. Serve immediately.
Notes
- If you have a griddle, you can make several eggs-in-a-hole at one time.
- If cooking in batches, add more butter to the pan, as needed.
