Plus, the sourdough wars are beginning, and more news to start your day

Everyone is cottagecore now

Suppliers of chicken hatchlings and vegetable seeds are being overwhelmed with orders from those newly homebound because of COVID-19 quarantines and shelter-in-place orders. NPR reports that hatcheries have been getting a wave of new customers who want to grow chickens for eggs in their backyards, and can barely keep up. Nancy Smith, owner of the Cackle Hatchery in Missouri, says, “We’ve never seen anything like this and I’ve been here since 1964.”

Online seed stores have also experienced a massive increase in orders, says Modern Farmer, leading some retailers to to shut down due to lack of supply. Seed companies say the demand is twofold: anxiety over food supply, and the boredom of being at home all the time. Which raises the point that there isn’t actually a food shortage—just a massive imbalance in where food is being allocated. Farmers are dumping a glut of milk down the drain, and vegetables are left to rot in fields without orders from restaurants and industrial kitchens. Meanwhile, food banks are having a hard time keeping up with demand.
