You may have seen me talk about chakras on the blog before. Maybe you’ve read some of my other posts about them (on the seven Earth chakras and on meditations for each of the main chakras), or maybe you have no idea what a chakra is! Either way, keep reading to learn about something I’ve never talked about before: the earth star chakra.
What is a chakra?
In a nutshell, a chakra is a center of energy in the body.
Anodea Judith, a spiritual teacher, therapist, and author of nine books on chakra healing, describes chakras as “organs in the energetic body,” “the architecture of the soul,” and, “an energetic expression of who we are.” Similarly, New York Times bestselling author and master energy healer Deborah King explains that “the chakras hold the secrets to how you feel about yourself and your world, how you get along with other people, the health of your body, your financial situation, whether or not your weight is a problem, how you make decisions, your spiritual advancement, and access to your own spiritual gifts,” just to name a few areas of life in which chakras can have influence.
There are seven primary chakras in the body: The root chakra, sacral chakra, solar plexus chakra, heart chakra, throat chakra, third eye chakra, and crown chakra.
However, there could be chakras beside these main seven. Some believe that there are actually 114 chakras in total! One of these other chakras, called the earth star chakra, doesn’t receive as much attention as it probably deserves.
What is the earth star chakra?
The earth star chakra is not located in the physical body like most of the other chakras are, yet it still can have significant effects on day-to-day life.
The chakra is believed to be located about twelve inches below the feet, in the etheric (or non-physical) body.
Also referred to as one of the sub-personal chakras or as the “super root,” its most important features are its rooting and grounding properties. While it would seem like the root chakra itself already handles this (as it largely does), the earth star chakra goes a step further to be the anchor of the whole chakra system, especially of those seven main chakras.
The earth star chakra connects one’s personal energy (and thereby all one’s bodily chakras) to the greater earthly and universal energies. This connection allows for feelings of grounding, stability, and wellbeing.
This chakra also helps to manage one’s energies by dispelling negative energy and channeling positive energy from the earth. As a conduit for this positive energy, the earth star chakra helps foster feelings of connection with the earth, the ability to stay present in day-to-day tasks and routines, and a sense of being rooted in something greater than oneself, which is beneficial for self-awareness and clear thinking. On the other hand, though, letting the earth star chakra get ‘out of tune’ can lead to feeling out of touch with oneself and one’s surroundings.
How do we take care of this chakra?
So how do we balance our earth star chakras? Well, it’s pretty simple, actually. For one thing, just get outside! Connecting with the earth itself is a fantastic place to start. After all, you have to be familiar with that which you’re trying to connect to!
Considering the earth and planet in your daily decisions can help you feel more connected, too. For those who almost never camp, walk outside barefoot, or hike in the wilderness, I encourage you to give it a try. While there’s a learning curve, I have tons of resources to help you navigate hiking for the first time, camping for the first time, and eliminating plastic from your travels.
Furthermore, meditation is a powerful tool in chakra balancing (you can join a week of chakra meditations with me here). Doing a “tree meditation” specifically can be beneficial, as it can help you visualize your roots growing down to the center of the earth, re-centering your earth star chakra.
Also, it is important to note that focusing solely on any one chakra — even the earth star — can’t solve everything. Each and every chakra requires care and attention, from the main seven in the body to the others like the earth star chakra.
Imagine how much healthier our planet and world would be if everyone connected so deeply to the earth and saw it as their rooting force?
