How to Make the BEST Ham Steak Recipe

  • Key ingredients you’ll need to make homemade Southern Ham Steak Recipe: Two 12-16 oz boneless ham steaks, olive oil or vegetable oil, unsalted butter, orange marmalade, orange juice, light brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, onion powder, granulated garlic or garlic powder, ground ginger, ground cloves, cornstarch dissolved in 2 teaspoons of cold water to thicken the sauce.
  • Kitchen tools you’ll need: Large skillet or pan, small bowl, tongs, whisk, measuring cup and measuring spoons.
  • Where do I find Ham Steaks? They’re typically found in the grocery store with the other packaged and cured meats. One of the most common brands is Smithfield, but there are other brands.
  • Variations: You could make these ham steaks using a different flavor of marmalade, jam or jelly. Apricot jam, peach preserves, apple jelly or pepper jelly for a sweet and spicy flavor.
  • Substitutions: You could make this recipe with a bone-in ham steak as well. A bone-in ham steak will take longer to cook, so follow the package directions and simmer until the ham is fully cooked.
  • You could use red wine vinegar in place of cider vinegar. You could add one tablespoon of Dijon mustard or a splash of maple syrup or pineapple juice to the sauce.
  • Cured ham has plenty of salt so there’s no need to add more. You can adjust the flavor and add salt to your taste.
  • Serving Suggestions and Side Dishes to serve with Ham Steak: You can serve ham steaks for breakfast with eggs and biscuits or as a main dish at any meal with stuffed sweet potatoes, green beans and potatoes, pea salad, honey roasted carrots, mac and cheese, broccoli casserole or rice pilaf. Ham is especially delicious served with fluffy Southern buttermilk biscuits or yeast rolls.
  • Leftovers and Storage: Store leftover Ham Steak in an airtight container or wrapped with aluminum foil chilled in the fridge for up to 3 days. Store the sweet glaze separately from ham and reheat it in the microwave.
  • Reheating: Reheat ham gently in the microwave or in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. You can also reheat a slice of ham on a baking sheet in a preheated 350°F oven.
  • Freezer Tips: You can cube the ham steak or freeze it whole in plastic bags or a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator and use it as a topping for salads, in casseroles, omelettes or on hot biscuits.
